When Vaccine Recommendations Diverge

At IVS, we strive to provide consistent access to objective information regarding vaccines. For this purpose, our website contains summaries of each of the vaccines routinely recommended to the general population in the United States, which include information on their effectiveness, safety, contraindications/precautions, and target diseases. Each vaccine summary begins with official recommendations for use.

Historically, IVS has cited only the recommendations developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), as ACIP recommendations have long represented harmonized vaccine recommendations adopted across professional medical associations and public health organizations. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now has different recommendations than ACIP. This presages a departure from the decades of harmonization between ACIP and AAP recommendations.

For this reason, IVS has added recommendations of relevant professional medical organizations such as AAP to our vaccine summaries whenever they diverge with ACIP recommendations.

Regardless of shifts in the political landscape, IVS will continue to independently assess vaccines and vaccine safety to guide decision making at the policy, practice, and individual level.
